Mrs. Xydias' Fourth Grade Website
Welcome to the 4EX Family!
In 4EX, we strive to be our best selves every day by making choices that make ourselves proud! The 4EX Family works hard each day to give our best academic effort. However, we also work on being respectful, kind, considerate, helpful, responsible, independent, accountable, and so much more!
4EX is a family classroom community that is safe, fun, and comfortable. This then allows us to learn and grow as we challenge ourselves to be risk takers and move out of our comfort level on our continuing journey as readers, writers, mathematicians, scientists, researchers, and positive role models.
Thank you, parents, for your support and all that you do for your fourth grader!
Reading
Fourth graders will be immersed in a variety of chapter books from different genres (fiction, realistic fiction, historical fiction, informational, fantasy, and poetry). In addition, students will continue to practice the fundamental reading skills. These skills include all the dimensions of fluency, accuracy, and comprehension. After completing their reading assignment, students answer comprehension questions in their Reading Response Journal. These responses are expected to have details , correct capitalization and punctuation, evidence from the text, and be written in complete sentences and in paragraph format.
Writing
Writers this year will be creating pieces of work within the following writing units:
- Personal Narrative
- Opinion
- Informational
In addition to implementing the style, format, and technique that is specific to the different unit, students will be expected to incorporate correct grammar and mechanics in their writing. Editing and revision is also expected.
Science
Your child will be receiving their science instruction with Mrs. Currier. We are a switching class, which means that about every six weeks, your child will visit Mrs. Currier's classroom for their science class. The units Mrs. Currier will cover this year are:
- Rocks and Minerals
- Electricity- Static and Current
- Chemistry-Mystery Powders
- Bones and Muscles
Math
Knowing math facts is critical in fourth grade. By the time students enter fourth grade, they are expected to have mastered addition, subtraction, and multiplication facts. Truth be told, the students that struggle with the more challenging fourth grade math concepts are the ones that do not know their facts. Although we continue to practice math facts in the classroom, it is crucial that students practice at home. By the end of fourth grade, students will be expected to be fluent in their division facts.
Units covered this year:
1. Place Value
2. Multiplication
3. Division
4. Fractions
5. Decimals
6. Geometry
7. Graphing
8. Measurement
9. Aea & Perimeter
10. Elapsed Time
11. Logic Problems
Social Studies
I teach 4EX and 4VC social studies. The units students will explore during our social studies block include:
- Mapping
- US Regions
- Overview of the States and Capitals
- New Hampshire Government, Studies, and History
Homework
The following are mandatory nightly assignments:
- Read for at least 20 minutes
- Practice math facts
- Do a math worksheet or game
Websites
Stapled in your child's Home Folder is a website and password reference sheet with all the online programs we use in the classroom. Students are able to access all of the free websites at home (except for Epic!, which requires a paid subscription to access outside of the classroom).
Γεια σου!
My name is Mrs. Xydias and this is my fourth year teaching at Newmarket Elementary School. In my first year at NES I taught third grade, and for the past three years I have been teaching fourth grade. I graduated from Salem State University with a Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education and Psychology. I also have a Master's Degree in Literacy. I am a life-long learner who is always looking to grow and explore.
Although this is my fourth year at NES, it is my tenth year teaching. In addition to being a Special Education Paraprofessional and a Title I Tutor, I have taught kindergarten, first, second, and third grade.
My husband and I have been married for 10 years and we have a baby boy named Aristides (Ari). He is the light of our lives, a blessing, a true gift, and our miracle. Aristides is full of energy, laughter, love, and life! We also have an energetic dog named Leeza. She loves to eat, play catch-it with a tennis ball, run, and sleep.
Some of my favorite things are my family, friends, Leeza, the beach, chocolate, the sun, traveling, flavored iced coffee, and so much more!
4EX isn't just a fourth grade classroom, it's also a family. It is equally as important to learn how to be a community member as it is to learn the fourth grade curriculum. We value respect and kindness in the classroom as we learn to be independent, responsible, and accountable members of our classroom. Fostering a safe and nurturing environment is very important to me. This allows us to be comfortable to learn, take risks, challenge ourselves, work beyond our comfort levels, and grow as individuals, and as learners.
