Staff Spotlight: Anna Higgins

What is your job title and school?

I am a 3rd grade teacher at Newmarket Elementary School.

What is your favorite part of your job and of teaching/working in Newmarket?

The best part of my job is figuring out ways to make learning fun and engaging for my students. I always love to wear a great costume if it is warranted.

I also really love working with such a great team of colleagues within my team. They make coming to work fun.

Where did you grow up? Where did you go to college?

I was born and raised for 9 years in Atlanta, Georgia. Then I moved to Chevy Chase, Maryland where I lived until I was 22. Along the way I went to the Interlochen Arts Academy in Michigan for part of high school, and The College of Wooster in Ohio.

How long have you worked in Newmarket? Where did you work before that?

Next year will be my 20th year in this position! Before that, I taught 4th grade in Manchester for 4 years and was a reading teacher for a year before that. I also worked as a part time enrichment teacher in Seabrook for 4 years. I've been teaching for a while!

Please tell us about your family. Pets?

I raised my two daughters here in Newmarket, all the way from k-12. They are now 27 and 25 and married or getting married! I am remarried as of 2024 and have two stepsons who are also grown. I live with my husband and one of my stepsons. After living in Newmarket for 25 years, I moved in 2022 to East Kingston.

What activities/interests do you enjoy outside of work?

Outside of work I love listening to and making music. I love crafting and reading and visting my girls whenever I get the chance.

What is the most interesting place you have visited in your travels?

After my sophomore year in college I had the opportunity to backpack through Europe with my friend. We visited France, Italy, Germany, Austria, and Greece. Greece was my absolute favorite. I also spent a semester studying in the Czech Republic outside of Prague. While I was there I visited Poland and Slovakia. My time in the country was fascinating because the country had gained freedom from communism a year earlier and they were in a period of great transition.

Name three items that are on your "bucket list."

I would love to see the Grand Canyon and drive parts of Route 66.

I would love to visit Scotland, particularly the Highlands

I would love to retire close to either of my children, particularly when grandchildren start coming.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?

My dad always told me to "kill 'em with kindness." It has worked to help me to turn predictably bad interactions into good ones.

Some of my Favorites..

Music - The Beatles

TV - Game of Thrones

Authors - Jodi Picout, Freida McFadden
